About Event

Carbon removal is essential to achieving Paris Agreement goals, alongside deep and rapid emissions reductions. Growing recognition of this fact, reflected across multiple successive IPCC assessments and the first Global Stocktake, has driven an extraordinary transformation over the last decade: carbon removal has transitioned from an academic concept to a real world, multi-sector movement materializing across every region of the world.

However, in spite of recent advancements, today, carbon removal is not on track to reach multi-gigatonne scale by mid-century. The next five years represent a critical window to alter its trajectory in alignment with science-based targets.

In the spirit of COP30's core animating principle set by the Brazilian Presidency, this challenge demands a global Mutirão for carbon removal—collective action to accomplish an urgent task too great for any one actor alone. This vision is embodied in a new Plan to Accelerate Solutions launched as part of the Belem action agenda, which is anchored in a 2030 CDR Implementation Target to signal demand, de-risk investment, and set the learning curve needed to reach mid-century targets.

Hosted by the Group of Negative Emitters, WBCSD, and other plan contributors, this closed-door roundtable will convene senior leaders from government, business, finance, and civil society to explore collective actions required to advance CDR as a core pillar of our shared climate response, with specific focus on near-term 2030 targets.

Key topics for discussion:

  • Current status and landscape of carbon removal: where deployment, policy, and investment stand today.

  • New initiatives and developments in 2025 that signal forward momentum toward the 2030 target.

  • Opportunities to pool knowledge, set common standards, and reduce risks for first movers.

  • Concrete actions and partnerships that can scale CDR across voluntary demand, government frameworks, and industrial integration.
