Butter — A Novel of Food and Murder"
CyberPink wants to organize our inaugural offline book club to read Japanese author Asako Yuzuki’s novel "Butter — A Novel of Food and Murder."
This book club will give our community a space to discuss the cost of a woman’s refusal to make herself smaller in East Asian society, and why female desire, appetite, and “bodies out of control” are deemed radical, dangerous, and even sources of social upheaval. Together we’ll explore femininity, intimacy, and the power structures behind care work through this story about a journalist, a murderer, and extraordinary food.
The event is co-hosted with Accent Sisters. Hosts Xiaoyang and Xiaolan will do a brief reading and then open for group discussion. We hope everyone can read at least part of the novel or familiarize themselves with the book's general content.
We will send those who sign up with a PDF excerpt of sections we find compelling to facilitate the discussion.
Beyond reading, we've also set up an Échiré butter tasting station as our communal eating experience—try the butter extensively described in the novel, paired with homemade sourdough bread. A tribute to the book's title. We'll eat and chat about one of the novel's core questions: What does it mean for women to take pleasure seriously?
If you want to support CyberPink, consider buying us a virtual coffee. Monthly crowdfunding members have the chance to join our vibrant listeners group.
Main language of the event: Chinese (but since the book we're reading is in English, we'll inevitably switch back and forth during discussion)
Attendance will be limited to 20 people, so please sign up enthusiastically!
