Dignity Through Design
There's a moment inside every system built to help people - a clinic, a classroom, a food pantry, a company - where the design either restores someone's dignity or quietly takes it away. Most of the time, no one intended the second outcome. It's just what happens when a system gets built around efficiency instead of the person standing in it.
This month, MIX is looking through the lens of one of the most tangible examples of it in our own region. The new Community Food Hub in Rancho Cordova didn't set out to just move more food faster. Under the leadership of Executive Director Carrie Johnson, the team asked a harder question first: what if receiving help didn't have to feel transactional or rushed? The answer became a 6,600-square-foot space designed to feel less like a pantry and more like a neighborhood market where families shop, choose, and belong, rather than wait in line and receive.
We're bringing Carrie together with others from across healthcare, civic leadership, and research to widen the lens beyond food. Because the real question is what does it look like to build systems, spaces, and companies that treat the people inside them with dignity, not just efficiency?
