Space Governance Talk
There's a decent chance that humanity survives long enough to become a multi-planetary — and even multi-stellar — species. If so, most humans who will ever live may never set foot on Earth. Whether that future goes well or badly is a question of immense importance — and one of the most direct ways we can influence the answer is through space governance: the rules, norms, and institutions that will shape how humanity expands beyond our planet.
According to James Herbert, co-director of Effective Altruism Netherlands, space governance may be one of the most overlooked cause areas within EA today.
Join us for an evening on one of the least-discussed but potentially most consequential questions of this century.
About the speaker
Margot Stakenborg has done work in the space industry, and has been involved with EA for a couple years (with a focus on AI safety). Recently, she has started exploring possible impactful paths in space governance. In this talk, she'll discuss the current debates in space governance, what potential impactful paths are, and how this space might grow.
Who is this for?
Anyone with an interest is welcome, no technical background required. Fair warning: it's jargon-heavy and reflects an active, ongoing discussion in the field. Still, most interested EAs should follow along fine.
