About Event

In this talk, Dr. Priya will build on the piece she did for a Routledge Companion on Gender and Reproduction, employing Feminist Ethics of Care; she will reflect on the moral underpinnings of the Indian government’s decision to regulate “ethical altruistic surrogacy” and ban “exploitative commercial surrogacy” through The Surrogacy (Regulation) Act, 2021.

Traversing this law’s journey through Parliament, she aims to answer two primary questions: Is altruistic surrogacy, in principle, an ethical alternative to commercial surrogacy? and whose ethos is eventually reflected in the law?

With this background, we will discuss how technology and culture interact to shape what is and is not considered ethically and morally viable.

About Speaker:

Dr. Priya Sharma is an interdisciplinary scholar working across Anthropology, Sociology, and Philosophy.

Drawing both from her academic training (across sciences, humanities, and social sciences) as well as experience of working with various social justice movements, she researches the issues of ethics and justice in surrogacy, midwifery, respectful birthing and mothering, research across disciplinary boundaries, technology and society, speculative futures, bioethics, care in academia, and community-led relief initiatives, amongst other things.
