When the lanterns flicker and the fog rolls in off the Spree, Old Berlin remembers its dead.
Halloween may be an American tradition, but Berlin has never been short of ghosts. So this October we are bringing the holiday home to the city, in our own way: our Stammtisch leaves the warm tavern behind and steps out into the dark.
Our guide is Frederik Kröger, nightwatchman of the Nikolaiviertel, who walks the lanes with lantern and halberd as his family has done for generations. He speaks in the tongue of centuries past, and he will lead us through Berlin's oldest quarter, where giants, alchemists and sorcerers once left their mark.
We will pass Berlin's oldest church and the graves of its oldest cemetery. We will stand where the city gates once shut out the night. We will learn why the White Lady still wanders the palace of Cölln, restless after all these centuries. And we will return to the Gerichtslaube, where we gathered so cheerfully in September, to hear why in 1390 a man was put on trial there, even though he was already dead.
Costumes are entirely optional. Come as you are, or come as something that should not exist. Both are welcome.
When the tour ends and the nightwatchman disappears into the shadows, anyone who needs something to steady their nerves is welcome to join us for a drink nearby.
Bring your American friends, your German friends, and anyone brave enough to listen.
💶 A note on cost: The tour is covered by the Fulbright Alumni e.V. Only if we end up a really big group might we ask for a small cash contribution on the night. We will let you know in advance.
Cannot make it after all? Please cancel your registration on Luma as soon as possible, and no later than Monday, 26 October, so someone from the waitlist can take your place.
Spots are limited. Dress warmly, and bring your courage.
