WASM: Real world evidence for portability and maintenance.
WebAssembly (WASM) is a powerful and rapidly evolving technology that enables running code from languages like Python, C, and many others directly in the browser.
In this talk, we’ll start with a high-level overview of what WASM is, what advantages it offers, and how it integrates into the modern web ecosystem alongside JavaScript.
We’ll then take a closer look at the Emscripten toolchain, exploring how it compiles C/C++ to WASM and packages the result for seamless integration with JavaScript applications.
Finally, we’ll examine three real-world examples that highlight WASM’s versatility:
Using Python to generate charts, invoking python through Node.js.
Leveraging libxml2 (a C library) to validate XML in both Node.js and the browser.
Running SQLite entirely in the browser for client-side database functionality.
By the end you might have some ideas of your own on how to leverage WASM!
