About Event

In 1945, the Nations of Europe announced that everyone needs to calm down, stop fighting, and immediately establish world peace. When everyone said "bro what? you were the ones that were doing all the genociding and the colonising and massacring and looting for the last 200 years, what do you mean?" the Nations said, "stop overreacting, gosh," and set up a Big Building called the United Nations. "Aah, we can't wait for the year 2008 when we spend $23 million dollars on the decorative world-peace bringing roof," they said.

Fast forward to 2026, we are surrounded by world peace. Every livestreamed genocide, mass displacement event, and autonomous lethal weapon use is immediately addressed through a strongly worded report. The Nations promise that if you give them 20 years to handle the situation, they will definitely succeed in building a commemorative monument for the victims.

This workshop, a precursor to The Law Is On Your Side course, is a quick history lesson that uses humor, storytelling, and art to talk about the secret ingredient that makes international law flawed and turns Geneva Conventions into Geneva Suggestions: an uncomfortable colonial past that the discipline refuses to reckon with.

This workshop is facilitated by Yukti Saumya, who is teaching the 6-week course The Law is on Your Side, as part of our Fall Semester.
