Beyond the Moment: What It Takes to Stay

​In 2020, philanthropy made unprecedented commitments to racial justice, racial equity, and Black-led organizations. Six years later, nonprofit leaders, intermediaries, movement builders, and funders are navigating one of the most challenging landscapes in recent memory. Marked by political backlash, shrinking resources, organizational exhaustion, and growing uncertainty about what comes next.

​This year's Black Philanthropy Month Civic Dialogue asks a simple but urgent question:

​What does it take to stay in the work?

​Presented in partnership with SAARC, Social Justice Fund NW, and A Prepared Place, this conversation brings together leaders who have remained deeply committed before, during, and after the heightened attention of 2020.

​Together, we'll explore what sustained commitment requires, how philanthropy can move beyond moments of public urgency toward long-term accountability, and why relationships are the foundation of lasting racial justice work.

​Rather than revisiting promises made, we'll examine what it takes to keep them.

Aisha Al-Amin
Aisha Al-Amin currently serves as the development director at Social Justice Fund Northwest (SJF), where she leads the organization's fundraising strategy, Donor Advised Fund program, and supports communications. Aisha grew up in rural Eastern Washington with her big, mixed-race Black Muslim family. Her personal life mission is to support communities of color to live liberated and dignified lives through community organizing, nonprofit leadership, and creative writing. 

Beth McCaw
Beth McCaw is President & CEO of Bernier McCaw Foundation. Beth previously served as President & CEO of Washington Women’s Foundation and was a shareholder in the Seattle-based estate planning group of the law firm Stokes Lawrence PS.. Beth and Yahn have a long history of giving in their communities, most recently in Washington state, which has been their home since 1998.  It’s here that Beth had transformative experiences on the Board of Directors of YWCA of Seattle/King County/Snohomish County and YWCA USA, as President & CEO of Washington Women’s Foundation, and also as a member of the Sisterhood, a community of seven white women and six Black women who are living into what it means to deeply reckon with white supremacy and transfer resources back to Black families and communities.
