Some are calling it the Donroe Doctrine. Across the hemisphere, we are seeing threats of military action, tariffs, and territorial claims. The old imperial spectre is walking again. Once more, the Americas are being framed as a backyard to be controlled.

But the Americas have always held other futures.

The Zapatistas called for "un mundo donde quepan muchos mundos": a world where many worlds fit. Indigenous, Afro-descendant, and popular movements across the region live this idea every day. They show that the future is not one road. It is a pluriverse.

Our symposium, Reimagining the Hemisphere: From Imperial Narratives to Pluriversal Futures in Latin America and the Caribbean, brings together about a dozen authors from across the region. They come from Brazil, the Andes, Central America, and beyond. Each has written a paper on how the people of the Americas can move past imperial narratives and imagine their own futures.
