Overcoming the Stalemate on Marine Protection in Antarctica
To date, the fate of Antarctic and Southern Ocean ecosystems has rested with the few countries who are Parties to CCAMLR.
In their hands, there has been little to no conservation progress in almost a decade, and unsustainable krill extraction from a handful of fishing countries, coupled with the exponential impacts of climate change, now threatens the entire ecosystem.
The health of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean ecosystem is critical for the healthy functioning of the global ocean and plays a key role in regulating the Earth's climate, meaning what happens in Antarctica affects us all.
Serving as the launch of the Our Antarctica campaign, this event will stimulate discussion of Southern Ocean protections and showcase leaders from around the world who are focused on advancing Antarctic protections.
It will provide a platform to those countries with culturally and historically significant whale populations, to talk about the importance of protecting the Southern Ocean to safeguard both migratory whale corridors and global climate regulation, as many of these countries are on the forefront of climate change impacts.
