Telling Your Own Story: Community Writing and Storytelling Workshop
Many journalists start their careers with, or develop, a desire to tell stories from their own communities. Is this you, too? Maybe you've seen how your culture or community has been misrepresented by past or current media — or not represented at all — and you know you could do better. Maybe you have a story from your own lived experience you want to share so others know they're not alone. Whatever the case, the world needs your communities' stories. So, how can you get started?
Join Journalists for Human Rights and panellists Haley Lewis (Global News/Former JHR fellow) and Arti Patel (CBC/Didihood) for a free, two-hour online workshop moderated by Lisa Yeung (Centennial College/Formerly HuffPost Canada) where we dig into the practical and emotional considerations of telling stories when you are a journalist from a racialized or underrepresented community.
We'll touch on:
story development, self-reflection, and audience focus
newsroom/outlet support
sources, relationship building and resources
a reporter's placement in a story as a community member
The session will be interactive — bring your questions, conundrums and experiences to the conversation! This free workshop is open primarily to attendees from racialized or underserved communities: journalism students, students with an interest in story-telling, and early-career journalists/media professionals.
