About Event

Veterans For Peace #161 is honored to sponsor "An Evening with Kathy Kelly" tonight, October 9th, from 7 pm to 9 pm via Zoom.

Kathy has been a poverty and peace activist for more than four decades: first, in 1996, establishing the campaign of Voices in the Wilderness, and since 2005, Voices for Creative Non-Violence. She has made dozens of lengthy trips to Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as to South Korea, Gaza/Palestine, and many other countries. Kathy has authored a 2005 book entitled "Other Lands Have Dreams: From Baghdad to Pekin Prison", and has co-authored and co-edited other books and articles which have focused on the experiences of Afghan and Pakistani people facing the dire consequences of US military actions. She has also authored numerous articles in peace and religious journals, and on websites such as CounterPunch and CommonDreams.org .

Kathy is in demand as a speaker all across the US and abroad. It is in this capacity -- via Zoom -- that we welcome her to Johnson County (and environs) on Friday evening.

When asked about tonight’s topic of discussion, Kathy Kelly had this to say: "Facing devastating climate change, a global pandemic, and the corrosive shame of endless war, our true security lies in seeking survival through conversion: laying aside the futility of war and redirecting our energies and resources toward dealing with the greatest terror we all face, the terror of what we’re doing to our own environment. I will rely on accounts from people bearing the brunt of war in places like Yemen and Afghanistan to summon support for a simple proposition: Listen to the earth! And abolish war!"

After the opening introductions, Kathy will speak to us for 20-30 minutes, after which we will have a Q&A session. If you already have a particular question in mind for Kathy, please email it to [email protected] before 4 pm today and we will deliver it to the hosts to be read during the event.

If you are not able to join the conversation on your computer, you can join by phone. Feel free to contact us at [email protected] if you need any help and we’ll get you connected.
