CQC Speaker Event: David Hsieh @ Caltech
Who: Professor David Hsieh (In-Person)
When: October 20th, 4:00–5:00 pm
Where: Lauritsen 269, Caltech
Talk: Quantum Materials far-from-equilibrium
Abstract: The search for new electronic phases of matter has traditionally focused on materials in thermal equilibrium. Dynamically driven materials offer a complementary approach, using light to create transient electronic phases that may be inaccessible under equilibrium conditions. In this talk, I will discuss promising excitation techniques, recent experimental results, and the challenges and future opportunities in this field.
Bio: Professor David Hsieh is an experimental condensed matter physicist at Caltech whose research focuses on exotic broken symmetry and topological phases in strongly correlated, spin-orbit coupled, and out-of-equilibrium systems. He earned his B.S. from Stanford in 2003 and Ph.D. from Princeton in 2009, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at MIT. He joined Caltech in 2012 and has received numerous honors, including the Sloan, Packard, and Moore Foundation fellowships and the Presidential Early Career Award.
Everyone is welcome: minimal technical background is required. Come learn and ask questions. And yes, snacks will be provided.
