Next Wednesday (5/27) at 7:00 PM, we will screen I Am Cuba.
In 1964, after completing The Cranes Are Flying, Soviet director Mikhail Kalatozov traveled to Cuba and collaborated with local filmmakers to create this singular work.
The film consists of four distinct yet interconnected stories, portraying the lives and struggles of people from different social classes in pre-revolutionary Cuba. Throughout the film, a female narrator speaks as the voice of Cuba itself, weaving individual stories into a poetic reflection on the island’s history and reality.
With its astonishing long takes, intricate staging, and fluid cinematography, I Am Cuba is widely regarded as one of the greatest achievements in cinematography in film history, and has had a profound influence on generations of filmmakers.
The film was largely ignored upon its original release, only to be rediscovered decades later and eventually become a legend among cinephiles and filmmakers alike.
