Generative Art Therapy and AI: Expanding Emotional Expression
What does it mean to integrate artificial intelligence into therapy without compromising the therapeutic alliance?
This talk explores how AI, when used intentionally and ethically, can function as a collaborative tool that deepens reflection, expression, and connection rather than replacing human care.
Drawing from clinical practice, theory, and a live demonstration, this session centers on how therapists can use AI in tandem with clients.
This session will feature a live generative art therapy demonstration exploring how AI-supported imagery and human-guided prompting can deepen emotional expression beyond words alone. Through visual metaphor, symbolic imagery, and collaborative meaning-making, participants will see how AI can help externalize emotion, expand emotional and semantic vocabularies, and support access to feelings that may be difficult to process verbally.
Andrew H. Kim, MSW, ABD, LCSW, LCADC is an actively practicing clinician clinically licensed as both a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LCADC) in New Jersey, specializing in complex and co-occurring mental health and substance-use conditions. He is also an MSW lecturer at Rutgers University and a PhD candidate whose research focuses on computational and geospatial methods in behavioral health and global poverty, advancing AI for Social Good through a Data Justice lens.
