ALLEY 108 -Overview

This project is presented as an officially selected program of DIG SHIBUYA 2026, organized by the Agency for Cultural Affairs.
Set within Shibuya—a city continuously reshaped by redevelopment—the project unfolds around a fictional narrative envisioning a single remaining blank block 100 years in the future.

An existing alleyway will be fully closed off and transformed into a speculative future city where art, music, technology, and humanity’s “108 earthly desires” intersect.
ALLEY108 is a three-day immersive experimental space that envisions the future of street culture, focusing on artists and underground cultures born from the margins.

The word “ALLEY” refers to backstreets, while 108 represents the number of earthly desires in Buddhism—symbolizing human desire, confusion, and suffering, categorized through combinations of sense × time × mind.
These desires are understood as one of the driving forces behind Shibuya’s urban culture, and even 100 years into the future, they are seen as universal and essential to humanity.
ALLEY108 is named as a space that embodies this idea.

Four Core Elements of ALLEY108

1. World-Building & NPCs for Extreme Immersion

The venue is enclosed by a fortress-like gate that separates it from the outside world. Inside, an art-set environment blends street culture with ruin-like elements.
NPC (Non-Player Character) performers—cast as “residents of ALLEY108”—wander throughout the space.

2. Soundscapes Filling the Street: DJ Sets & Live Performances

Over 50 DJs, performers, and artists from Japan and abroad—representing the global underground scene—will gather, including internationally recognized audiovisual artists and collaborative stages.
Music collectives from Europe and North America will participate, creating an immersive environment using lasers and spatial audio to hijack both sight and sound.

3. Winter Market

Exclusive goods and artworks will be available, including original art by leading artists and collaborative items with brands representing next-generation culture—available only at this event.

4. Spatial Production

In addition to physical set design, the space is expanded through advanced technology.
AR (Augmented Reality), graffiti, lasers, and projection mapping merge into XR live performances, layering digital elements onto real alleyways to create a fully immersive audiovisual experience.
