Wealth, Inequality and Future of Shared Cities
South Africa’s extreme wealth inequality is not just a statistic — it is a lived reality shaped by generations of land dispossession, exclusion, and structural barriers to opportunity. This event, hosted in partnership with SCIS, Young Urbanists, and Ndifuna Ukwazi, will unpack how wealth, land, and power shape our cities and how we can reimagine them to work for everyone.
Through evidence-based insights, lived experiences, and practical examples, we will explore ways to close the wealth gap — from fairer land use to inclusive infrastructure and housing justice. The agenda is as follow:
18:00 – 18:05 – Welcome
18:10 – 18:25 – Wealth Inequality in South Africa and Corporate Power – Aroop Chatterjee
18:25 – 18:40 – “The land ownership never changes”: Wealth inequality, elite power, and the private city – Dr. Ujithra Ponniah
18:40 – 18:55 – Land and Housing Justice – Buhle Booi
18:55 – 19:30 – Q&A and Discussion – Facilitated by Young Urbanists
19:30 – 20:30 – Refreshments & Networking
This is a space for urban practitioners, community leaders, activists, and residents to come together, share solutions, and connect research to real-world change.
Young Urbanists will help facilitate a 30-minute interactive dialogue and Q&A session, giving participants the opportunity to exchange ideas, share lived experiences, and identify practical steps toward solutions.
Join us as we move the conversation beyond problems, toward building a more equal and shared urban future.
