(Virtual) Jazz Saxophonist Howard Wiley & Ital Soup
Please join us virtually on Saturday, December 19, 2020 as Sound & Savor’s co-production with NouCuisine presents Chef Philip Gelb in conversation with musician, Howard Wiley.
In the West Oakland kitchen, Phil will be cooking up a pot of Ital Soup, a quintessential dish in the Jamaican Rastafarian Ital culinary tradition. In his own kitchen in another part of Oakland, Howard will also be cooking up the same dish with his wife. Following the live cooking session, Howard will perform solo on the tenor saxophone. Come and cook, socialize, dine, and enjoy sexy jazz tunes with us.
A discussion about vegan cooking, music, the changing face of Oakland, life, and making a living in the COVID-era will be taking place. Attendees will receive the Ital Soup recipe upon registration. VIP passes available now.
――――
Ital soup is a simple, everyday dish — silky, spicy, with a variety of textures from the different roots and greens and pigeon peas.
Made with coconut milk, stock, root vegetables, greens, and flavored with fresh thyme, allspice berries, and chili peppers. In a one-pot meal, some beans are added, too.
