Nature-Positive Solutions in the Maritime Industry
Invite-only: A closed working session on the sidelines of Building Bridges
Ports and shipping sit at the intersection of global trade, national security and environmental risk, and the capital to fix this is still stuck on the sidelines. Nature-positive solutions for the maritime sector exist. What is missing is coordinated adoption, and that is what this session is built to change.
Orchestrated by Innovate 4 Nature and Metastable Ventures, this working session brings together port operators, shipping lines, institutional investors, insurers and nature-tech innovators around a shared mission:
to de-risk and commercialise nature-positive infrastructure so it becomes standard practice for port operations and investors by 2030.
On the sidelines of Building Bridges 2026, we will be convening a small, closed room with:
Leaders from port authorities, shipping lines, finance and insurance, alongside nature-tech founders working across biofouling prevention, coastal resilience and blue carbon
For a 3-station working carousel on pressures, adoption barriers and capital, plus a success story presentation grounded in a real pilot
To produce a shared diagnosis of what is blocking capital flow into maritime nature-tech, and documented commitments from the room
Live in Geneva, alongside Building Bridges
This is not a conference panel or a pitch event.
Why Now
Per the WEF's Future-Proofing Ports report, 86% of ports are exposed to more than three natural hazards, with climate-related disruption costs potentially reaching $25–30bn a year by 2050 — while nature-positive strategies could unlock $54bn in annual business value by 2030.
WWF's Nature-Positive Ocean Pathways report for the port sector finds marine species populations have fallen 56% since 1970. The obstacle is not a lack of solutions, but a lack of coordinated adoption.
Programme
Welcome & Grounding Host welcome, participant introductions.
The Action Lab: 3-Station Carousel Three mixed groups rotate across three facilitated stations (Pressures & Risks, Barriers & Adoption, and Finance & Capital) mapping, challenging and solution-orienting in three rounds.
Plenary Synthesis Station facilitators share the top interventions from each table; open discussion connects pressures, adoption and finance.
Success Story One portfolio solution presents a real port or coastal pilot (the problem, what worked, and the path to scale), followed by open Q&A.
Commitments & Next Steps Each participant states one concrete action, connection or pilot they commit to after the session.
Your Hosts
Innovate 4 Nature A Swiss foundation accelerating nature-positive solutions. Through portfolio building, ecosystem partnerships and thought leadership, I4N fosters regenerative business models.
Metastable Ventures A European early-stage investment platform connecting corporates with the impact startups they will actually buy from. Through venture clienting and direct capital deployment across energy, materials and biodiversity, Metastable validates each investment thesis against real corporate demand before capital moves, and is building a dedicated coalition around port and coastal operators.
