Many people know their Chinese zodiac sign. They’ve seen the Yin-Yang symbol. Some may have looked up the I Ching or tried Chinese astrology out of curiosity. But most of the time, we only see the symbols: Dragon, Tiger, Yin, Yang, Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water. They feel mysterious, but it’s not always clear how they actually connect. This lecture starts with one simple question: what is the logic behind these symbols? We’ll begin with Wu Xing, the Five Phases. Wu Xing is not five elements, and it’s not just a way to label personality types. It describes five modes of change: Wood grows, Fire reveals, Earth harmonizes, Metal gathers and refines, Water flows. We’ll look at the ideas of “substance” and “function” from The Great Meaning of the Five Phases, and ask a key question: why five? Yin-Yang is two. The Four Images are four. Why does this system need a central Earth? Then we’ll look upward: stars, the Dipper, the Twenty-Eight Mansions, and how these ideas became part of Chinese astrology. Ancient Chinese did not look at the sky only as decoration. They used celestial patterns to understand time, direction, rhythm, and human states. At the end, we’ll look at our own charts — not as fixed labels, but as a way to turn Wu Xing, stars, and Eastern symbolic systems into a language for daily self-reflection.
很多人知道自己的生肖，也见过阴阳图，可能还尝过 《易经》 或 中国占星。 但大多数时候，我们只是看到一些符号：龙、虎、阴、阳、木、火、土、金、水。它们看起来很神秘，却不知道它们到底是怎么连在一起的。 这场讲座想做的事情很简单：从五行开始，把这套东方符号背后的逻辑讲清楚。 五行不是五种元素，也不是给人贴标签的性格分类。它更像五种变化的方式：木在生长，火在显现，土在调和，金在收束，水在流动。我们会从《五行大义》里的“体”和“性”讲起，再讨论一个很有意思的问题：为什么是五？阴阳是二，四象是四，为什么还需要一个居中的“土”？ 接着，我们会把视线从地上转到天上：星辰、斗建、二十八宿，以及它们如何进入中国占星术。古人不是只看星星好不好看，而是用它们理解时间、方位、节律，甚至人的状态。 最后，我们会一起看看自己的星盘，而是把五行、星辰这些东方符号，变成一种日常观察自己的工具。
