Honouring Our Communities: Conversations on Belonging and Equity
This facilitated round table invites professionals to reflect on what "Honouring Our Communities" means within a professional setting, both historically and in our work today. Rather than a presentation, this is a space for honest dialogue, shared experience, and collective problem-solving.
Discussion prompts may include:
Who or what communities have shaped your own path into, or through, this industry?
Where do you see strong, supportive community within our organisation today, and where is it missing?
Equity isn't the same as equality. What's one example, in hiring, progression, or day-to-day team dynamics, where treating people "the same" actually disadvantaged someone?
What's one concrete action each of us could take this month to better honour the communities we work alongside?
How do we ensure that recognition during Black History Month translates into year-round inclusive practice?
The round table will close by grounding the conversation in why this work matters structurally. Equity isn't about lowering standards, it's about removing the barriers that prevent talented people from meeting them. In a science-led industry, that means more perspectives shaping the questions we ask and the problems we choose to solve. Honouring our communities means recognising that inclusion isn't separate from scientific progress, it's part of what makes it possible
