​In the sprawling, sun-baked labyrinth of Los Angeles, Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski shuffles through life in a bathrobe and flip-flops, content with his simple trinity of bowling, White Russians, and CCR. But when thugs mistake this perpetually stoned slacker for a millionaire namesake, The Dude tumbles into a wonderfully twisted rabbit hole of ransom plots, nihilist threats, and severed appendages. The Coen Brothers craft their most defiantly shaggy-dog story here, a noir parody that revels in its own magnificent tangents and dead ends. Jeff Bridges embodies The Dude with such lived-in authenticity that he seems less like he's acting than simply being himself in an increasingly surreal world. John Goodman explodes as his Vietnam-obsessed bowling partner, while Julianne Moore glides through as a conceptual artist with mysteriously practical motives. This is comedy as cosmic joke, where the journey matters infinitely more than any destination, and where "abiding"—simply rolling with life's absurdities—becomes its own form of zen wisdom.
