Most of our important conversations happen among people we already know — friends, colleagues, people with similar backgrounds or ways of seeing the world.
And increasingly, disagreement happens somewhere else: online, at a distance, reduced to positions we defend rather than people we encounter.
The Empty Chair creates another kind of public conversation.
Three provocative statements will be revealed over the course of the evening. You won't know them in advance.
Each begins around small tables, among people who may see the world very differently.
Then the Empty Chair opens.
If something from your table deserves to be heard by the whole room — an argument, a disagreement, a story, a question — take the chair.
No panel. No experts telling the room what to think. No need to reach consensus.
Because public life doesn't only happen in parliaments, universities or on our screens. It also happens when ordinary people sit across from one another and take each other's ideas seriously.
