From Ozempic to Dupixent: The History of Big Pharma Advertising
โ๐ America is one of ONLY two countries in the world that allows pharmaceutical companies to advertise prescription drugs directly to consumers. But how did we get here?
โIn this lecture, Patrick Kelly, science writer, educator, and creator of a medical history YouTube channel with over 150,000 subscribers, explores the surprisingly controversial history of pharmaceutical advertising in the United States. From colonial-era apothecary ads and snake oil salesmen to modern drug commercials and social media campaigns, he traces how drug companies shifted from marketing directly to patients, to doctors, and eventually back to consumers.
โAlong the way, this talk examines a question that has sparked debate for centuries: how much should patients actually know about the medicines they take? ๐บ
