Last month, Bay Area Founders Club hosted our second Top AI Researchers Roundtable, bringing together a highly curated group of AI researchers, founders, and industry leaders for a candid, off-the-record discussion on the future of artificial intelligence. Our attendees included:

On August 15, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM, we will host the third edition of our Top AI Researchers Roundtable & BBQ Party at a $50M mansion in Woodside Hills, co-hosted with NextFin, bringing together leading AI researchers from organizations such as OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Anthropic, xAI, and other frontier AI companies and research institutions.
This will be a fully closed-door, off-the-record conversation focused on the future of AI systems—from frontier research breakthroughs and emerging technical challenges to the next wave of opportunities that could shape the industry over the coming years.
The gathering is intentionally designed to be intimate, high-signal, and discussion-driven. No presentations. No panels. No media. Just thoughtful conversations among some of the brightest minds building the future of AI.
Following the roundtable, guests will continue the discussion over a private BBQ reception with fellow researchers, founders, and industry leaders.
What This Gathering Is About
This will be a fully closed-door, off-the-record discussion focused on frontier AI breakthroughs, emerging challenges, and the future direction of intelligent systems.
The format is intentionally intimate and discussion-driven.

Core Discussion Topics
1. The Endgame of Model Infrastructure: Will Inference Become a Commodity?
Over the past two years, infrastructure companies such as Fireworks, Together AI, and Baseten have built meaningful businesses by optimizing model serving and inference. But as open-source inference engines like vLLM and SGLang rapidly improve, NVIDIA pushes more optimization into hardware and NIM, and frontier model providers such as OpenAI and Anthropic become the largest inference platforms themselves, what durable moat remains for independent inference providers?
How will the AI infrastructure stack ultimately evolve—from GPU clouds (e.g. CoreWeave), inference optimization, model routing and orchestration, to agent runtimes, memory, and context management? Which layer will capture the greatest long-term value? Or will inference eventually resemble the CDN market—a scale business where differentiation steadily disappears?
2. Open-Weight vs. Closed Models: As Model Capabilities Converge, Who Captures the AI Profit Pool?
If the frontier advantage of proprietary models shrinks from twelve months to just a few months, what will justify premium pricing? Will competitive advantages come from proprietary data flywheels, product distribution, enterprise trust, reinforcement learning environments, or post-training know-how?
Conversely, while open-weight models such as Llama, Qwen, and DeepSeek continue to dominate on cost and flexibility, could they ultimately power 80% of inference while capturing only 20% of the industry's economic value?
Will the United States eventually experience its own "DeepSeek Moment"? If so, who is most likely to trigger it—and what incentives would drive that shift?
3. Beyond AI Coding: What Will Create the Next Trillion-Dollar Compute Market?
AI coding has become the first AI application where token consumption scales directly with measurable economic value, generating orders of magnitude more compute demand than traditional chatbots.
What application comes next? Will it be long-horizon autonomous agents, AI for scientific discovery, video generation and world models, or AI-powered digital employees capable of replacing knowledge-work workflows?
More importantly, what criteria should we use to identify the next breakout category? Is success determined by verifiable reinforcement learning signals, scalable data availability, or the ability to replace existing enterprise software budgets?
4. Continuous Learning: An Engineering Challenge or a Paradigm Shift?
Today's frontier models still improve primarily through periodic offline retraining, while humans continuously learn through real-world interaction.
What is the fundamental bottleneck preventing models from learning online? Is it catastrophic forgetting, the lack of scalable memory architectures, sparse reinforcement learning signals, or the limitations of today's safety and evaluation frameworks?
Can in-context learning, long-context reasoning, and external memory systems ultimately enable continuous learning, or are parameter updates still unavoidable?
How many major breakthroughs remain before we build AI systems that genuinely become smarter the more they are used?
5. The Physical AI Data War: Who Will Build the Defensible Data Moat for Robotics?
Large language models have largely exhausted the internet as a training resource, but robotics faces a fundamentally different challenge: there is no internet-scale dataset for the physical world.
Which data acquisition strategy will produce the strongest scaling laws?
Will the winning approach come from human demonstrations, teleoperation, simulation-to-real transfer, video learning, synthetic data generation, or fleets of robots collecting real-world experience at scale?
Ultimately, who will own the most valuable data moat in the robotics era—the companies with the largest hardware deployments (such as Tesla or Unitree), the builders of simulation infrastructure, the developers of foundation world models, or entirely new data platforms that have yet to emerge?
The defining question is whether Physical AI will follow the same data-driven trajectory as LLMs—or whether robotics will require an entirely new scaling paradigm.
