About Event

There's already a food forest growing all around us. We just need to find it.

Fruit and nut trees are scattered through our streets, parks, and neighborhoods, feeding people and wildlife.

Join naturalist and wild food enthusiast Neil Gormley of Wild Potomac as he leads a walk through the neighborhood and explains how to use the Falling Fruit app to map the free sources of wild food all around us.

Most of the food we buy comes with a carbon cost from farm equipment, fertilizer, packaging, refrigeration, and trucks hauling it hundreds or thousands of miles. Food gathered from a neighborhood tree has none of that. No supply chain, no shipping, no packaging.

As this article explains, urban foraging cuts food transportation emissions, keeps fruit from going to waste, and turns us into caretakers of the trees and green spaces around us, all while making our neighborhoods more food secure and resilient.

So come and help us while honing your tree ID skills and learning about opportunities to turn urban fruits and nuts into food this fall and winter.
