Factory farming in Africa: expansion, organizational landscape and bottlenecks
Date: Tuesday, May 12 (8 am PT / 11 am ET / 4 pm BST / 5 pm CEST)
About: Factory farming is expanding rapidly across Africa. The continent’s farmed land animal population is projected to grow from around 2.6 billion in 2012 to 9.4 billion by 2050, i.e., a 262% increase, driven by rising incomes, urbanization, and significant investment in industrial animal agriculture. Poultry alone is projected to grow from 1.8 to 7.4 billion animals. By mid-century, Africa is expected to surpass all other regions, except Asia, in the total size of its farmed-animal population. Despite the scale and urgency of the issue, the expansion of factory farming in Africa remains a relatively understudied and undersupported area within the global animal advocacy movement.
In this webinar, Moritz Stumpe (Animal Advocacy Africa) and Aurelia Adhiambo (The Humane League) will offer their perspectives on the current state of factory farming and animal advocacy on the continent.
In particular, they will discuss:
The current and projected scale of factory farming in Africa
The landscape of animal welfare organizations operating in Africa
Key funding and capacity gaps in the movement
Whether you are a researcher, an advocate, or a funder seeking to understand and engage with this rapidly growing yet currently neglected area, this session will provide an essential overview of the problem and the movement working to address it.
Speakers:
Moritz Stumpe: Moritz Stumpe is the Executive Director of Animal Advocacy Africa (AAA), an organization dedicated to building an effective farmed animal advocacy movement across the continent. His work at AAA spans research, strategy, capacity building, and talent pipelines for the African animal advocacy movement. In addition, Aurelia serves as an advisor to the Effective Altruism Animal Welfare Fund and Animal Charity Evaluators, and sits on the Advisory Board of the Animal & Vegan Advocacy (AVA) Summit, where she is also a Program Coordinator.
Format: We’ll start with two focused presentations, followed by a Q&A session.
