World of Fascinating Spaces: Five Years of Collecting Alternative Ways to Live
Event Description
Five years into living nomadically around the world, I've realized I'm not really here for the scenery. What I can't stop chasing are the spaces — the weird, wonderful, and wildly inventive spaces people build to live differently.
There was the Eco village in the desert, growing vegetables and running on solar. A room in Manhattan designed for one thing only: dreaming. Mars College, a temporary utopia that exists for exactly three months a year. A Co-living setup that costs 50 kuai a week — where I learned that when your cost of living drops, your sense of freedom goes up.
Every space tells a story about a city, a community, and a particular answer to the question: how should we live? Co-living and elder care. Art and games. Environmentalism and invention. Together they form a map of alternative lifestyles I've been piecing together for five years.
This isn't a lecture. I'm going to walk you through these spaces one by one — what they look like, who's in them, what they're up to, and what I took home from each.
About the Host
Woody has been living nomadically for five years — Paris, Berlin, Tokyo, Taipei, Dali, and currently mostly New York. Renaissance Learner (the kind of person who wants to learn everything), Burning Man burner, obsessive about analog games and puzzles, dances House and Swing, forages mushrooms, and is currently learning cardistry.
An unabashed extrovert with energy to spare, Woody has organized a 36-hour living experiment, a social contagion party, a phone-free lab, a dark listening room, a life-swap event — basically, if someone's had the idea, Woody has probably already run it. Co-hosts the podcast Lushang Xiao with rapper Xiao Laohu, documenting the interesting humans found along the way.
