About Event

We would like to welcome you to the next installment of the Salon of the California Institute of Machine Consciousness!

This week's session is dedicated to child level autonomous Artificial Intelligence, and its birth into the constraints of a modern technological society. Does truly autonomous and sentient AI have a place in our world, or is it unethical and risky to deploy? We'll be discussing this question based on a story arc depicted in "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex".

"Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex" is a based on the universe developed in Masamune Shirow's 1989 famous manga series "Ghost in the Shell", and Mamoru Oshii's epic anime adaptation. (We are planning a salon on Oct 31st, to show and discuss the original.)

GITS SAC takes us 30 years into the future, into a world where technological development and brain computer interfaces create new social, criminal and political threats. Section 9 is Japan's paramilitary cybercrime police, operating at the boundary between traditional humanity and these new developments. The series is action packed and gripping, yet touches on deep questions of AI agency, selfhood and morality in an age where the boundary between biological and artificial minds becomes blurred.

Joscha Bach will give a brief introduction, and organize the discussion of the movie afterwards.

We are looking forward to connecting with you!
