About Event

Join us for an artist talk exploring generative art and co-authorship with AI, where our artist fellow will share how generativity troubles authorship. From Vera Molnár’s algorithmic drawings to AI image synthesis, artistic intent is always entangled with algorithmic unpredictability. Who generates? And who owns the work?

Embodied Objects, Infrastructural Agents

In this talk, Brandon Tay introduces his practice through the lens of objects as proto-infrastructures. Rather than treating sculptures or devices as fixed forms, his works behave as mythotechnic engines that generate their own worlds. Projects such as Serpent Vessel operate like small, semi-autonomous systems—objects that produce stories, models, and conceptual behaviors around themselves. In Brandon’s practice, the object is not an endpoint but a beginning: a catalyst that reorganizes perception and opens new speculative environments.

Following this, Flora Weil presents her research into the upstream conditions that give rise to worlding. Instead of building discrete fictional environments, Flora looks at the infrastructures and non-human agencies that allow worlds to form and transform—parasites, webs, networks, identity botnets, and the soft architectures of translation. Her work shifts attention from worldbuilding to world-enabling, examining how collective and technological systems quietly shape the contours of experience and meaning.

Together, their talks explore the porous border between the human and non-human in contemporary world-making. Brandon approaches objects as mythic and autonomous agents; Flora examines infrastructures as active, co-authoring forces. Seen together, their practices suggest that worlds emerge not through singular authorship but through continuous exchanges between human intention and non-human systems—material, biological, technological, and linguistic. The result is a slow, philotechnical conversation about how worlds are sensed, generated, and remade.

About the Module 2 artist-fellow

Brandon Tay is a Singapore-born, Shanghai-based artist whose work explores the shifting boundaries between technology, fiction, and material form.Working through sculpture, simulation, and moving image, he creates objects that blur distinctions between system and symbol — between what we know and what we imagine. Tay has exhibited both individually and collaboratively at major international platforms such as the Singapore Biennale, Transmediale, the National Communications Museum (Melbourne), Art Dubai, and Frieze Seoul, among others.

About the guest speaker

Flora Weil takes a holistic approach to developing and thinking about technology that combines design, ecology, anthropology, engineering, cybernetics, philosophy. She is the recipient of past Strelka, Transformations of the Human, M+ Museum, and Design Trust fellowships that explored projects ranging from ecology-scale intelligence to worldbuilding as a form of research. She is currently teaching at NYU Shanghai, consulting on AI in luxury fashion, and co-leading Nephila, a studio that explores adversarial play, shared fictions, and anomalous forms of cognition.

About the programme

Entangled Agencies explores how humans and machines co-create, instruct, and learn from one another. Rather than treating machines as neutral tools or looming job-stealers, or simply as quick generators in a mechanical sense, this programme considers them as agents for creative collaborations.

Registration is from 6.30-7.00pm. Light refreshments will be provided.
