Sarma für Alle: A Trilingual Cooking Workshop
https://www.aramekan.de/en/sarma-fuer-alle
Hey everyone,
I'm Deniz, a psychologist who moved to Hamburg two and a half years ago. I'm still apartment hunting, still working on my German... Some days this city feels like mine, and some days it still feels like a place I'm visiting. Ara Mekân grew out of that in-between space, and this cooking-workshop is one small piece of it.
There is a kind of knowledge that lives in the hands rather than in words. Rolling sarma is one of those. It cannot be rushed, and it cannot really be taught through instruction alone, only through sitting next to someone, watching the fold, getting it wrong a few times, and slowly finding the rhythm.
Together we will roll sarma from scratch, vine leaves, filling, the whole unhurried process, while we talk, or don't talk, and let the repetitive motion of folding do what it usually does: settle the nervous system, and open space for conversation that wouldn't happen if we were sitting face to face with nothing to do with our hands. Food made together has always carried more than nutrition. It carries memory, migration stories, family, and the particular comfort of a dish that tastes like somewhere else, made in a place that has slowly become home.
No cooking experience is required. What matters more is a willingness to sit at a table with people you may not yet know, and to let something slow happen in a city that rarely asks us to slow down.
