Agentic IDEs & Spec-Driven Programming : A Hands-On Workshop | ARC @ VU
🚀 Agentic IDEs & Spec-Driven Programming
Software development is rapidly moving beyond traditional code editors and simple AI autocomplete. Modern development environments can understand project context, plan tasks, work across multiple files, assist with implementation, and help developers move from an idea to working software.
Join Atom Robotics Club (ARC) for a hands-on introductory workshop exploring this evolution — starting from the fundamentals of IDEs and extensions and progressing toward AI-assisted development, Agentic IDEs, and Spec-Driven Programming.
Using AWS Kiro as the primary demonstration platform, we'll explore how structured requirements and specifications can guide AI agents through planning, implementation, testing, and refinement.
🌟 What we'll cover
🧩 How extensions expand an IDE's capabilities
🤖 The evolution from traditional coding to AI-assisted development
⚡ What makes an IDE agentic
🔄 How coding agents can plan, implement, test, and iterate
📋 Fundamentals of Spec-Driven Programming
🛠️ Moving from Requirements → Specification → Plan → Implementation → Testing
🚀 A live demonstration using AWS Kiro
🌐 A brief look at the broader AI development ecosystem, including Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Windsurf, and Claude Code
🔴 Live Demo
We'll take a simple software idea and walk through the complete workflow - transforming it into structured requirements and specifications, generating an implementation plan, building it with an AI coding agent, and finally testing and reviewing the result.
No prior experience with AI coding tools is required. Basic familiarity with programming is enough to follow along.
