The America we thought we knew is gone. And it isn't coming back.

In this special live recording of After America, author and former speechwriter Don Watson joins Dr Emma Shortis to discuss the trajectory of the Trump administration, why Australia can’t avoid the rupture being brought about by the MAGA movement, the results of the midterm elections - and what might come next.

Presented by the Australia Institute.

Don Watson is the author of many acclaimed books, including Recollections of a Bleeding Heart, Death Sentence, American Journeys, The Bush, Watsonia, The Story of Australia and The Passion of Private White, as well as three Quarterly Essays on American culture and politics. His latest book is The Shortest History of the United States of America.

Dr Emma Shortis is the Director of International and Security Affairs at The Australia Institute. Emma hosts the After America podcast, and is the author of After America: Australia and the new world order (2025) and Our Exceptional Friend: Australia's fatal alliance with the United States.
