About Event

NYC has a militant history of tenants fighting against displacement and exploitation at the hands of slumlords and corrupt politicians. On November 1st, 1963 tenants in Harlem launched a historic rent strike across more than 34 buildings. This strike won New Yorkers rent stabilization! In the 1970s, Operation Move-in launched in Manhattan. Several buildings on the upper west side were set for demolition...buildings that hundreds of Black & Puerto Rican families called home. These families were set to be displaced out of their homes at the behest of the real estate industry. Instead, they took over their buildings... and so began the squatters movement in NYC, eventually expanding to Harlem where activists occupied multiple buildings in Morningside Heights.

Earlier this year, the tenants movement won a 2-year rent freeze. But we demand more! Tenants deserve long term protections from rent increases, and from slumlords who harass and exploit us. Join us to discuss how to harness tenant power in the fight against displacement and greedy landlords!

Tenant organizers and housing organizations from across the city will speak about:

- the rent freeze, who benefits and who is left out

- how to fight gentrification and displacement in Harlem

- how Zionist landlords in NYC fund the ethnic cleansing in Palestine

- connections between tenant power and land back for indigenous groups of NYC

- celebrate the rent strike anniversary of Nov 1, 1963 that led to rent stabilization protections!

* Bilingual English/Spanish event, interpreters provided

* Dinner and childcare provided!

* Prizes for everyone!
