Business of Research
Success in research requires more than strong scientific or scholarly ideas. It also requires an understanding of how research is funded, managed, and supported. This workshop introduces graduate students to the "business of research" by exploring the lifecycle of externally funded projects, from identifying funding opportunities and developing competitive proposals to managing awards and ensuring compliance with sponsor requirements. Participants will gain a practical understanding of the roles of research development, research administration, sponsored programs, and compliance offices, as well as the policies and processes that support research at universities, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and industry settings. Whether students pursue careers in academia, government, healthcare, nonprofit organizations, or the private sector, this session will provide foundational knowledge of grants and the research enterprise that will help them navigate and succeed in research environments throughout their careers.
