​Most conversations about planning start with what's wrong: the backlog, the determination times, the headcount. We want to start somewhere different.

​Planning teams across the country are doing skilled, difficult work under conditions no one would design on purpose. The people in this room know that better than anyone. The question we want to sit with for an hour is not what's broken — it's what's possible.

​If your planning teams had more capacity, what would they do with it? More time with residents. More time on the planning judgement that only your team can make.

​This year's LGA theme is "From Neighbourhoods to Nations — building lasting futures locally". Planning is where that thesis is tested every day. We want to spend a breakfast talking about the upside of getting it right — the housing built, the high streets revived, the neighbourhoods residents are proud of — with the people actually doing it.
