In the Woods: Wayfinding your Future
About the Workshop
For many of us, the future feels far away and out of reach. For others, it feels like the future is being forced on us at full speed, whether we like its trajectory or not. Both come from the same place: a disconnection from the future and from the role we have in shaping it.
This workshop will help you rebuild that connection and find yourself within the future. Once you can see where you sit in time, the concrete questions get easier to answer. Am I building toward a life that will actually make me happy? Do I want to stay on this career path? Should I move somewhere else entirely, or stay put?
We’ll do this outside, in the woods. Immersing ourselves in nature will be one of the key ways in which we (quite literally) ground ourselves. You'll get up close and personal with trees and use your senses in ways that might feel strange at first. Nothing is compulsory, and you can take any of it at your own pace. Expect it to be partly quiet and reflective, partly active and creative, and partly collaborative.
What will I get?
You'll leave with a set of tools for getting your bearings when the future feels uncertain, built on real methodology from strategic futures thinking (the futures cone, backcasting, etc.).
Courtesy of the lovely folks at Kamishovka Ceramics Studio, who have partnered with me for this event, you'll also create a ceramic relic you make yourself, to hold you to the commitments you made during the experience. This relic will be kiln-fired and returned to you 4-5 weeks after the session. And if the clay bug bites you, you'll also get a little gift to help you in your new ceramics journey.
About the Host
I’m Kinsey, a futurist and cultural anthroplogist with training in design thinking and strategic foresight. I run my own practice, Future in the Making, which is centered on bringing futures thinking down to the human level and helping people become more active agents in their own futures. I consult, teach, and write. To learn more about me, have a read through my Substack.
Further Details
The workshop will be on October 25th from 10-14 hr. Please plan to stay for the entire duration of the session.
The exact coordinates of the workshop will be sent out a week prior to the session, including a meeting place on a marked road to walk to the spot if necessary. We will be in the Trudering Forest, which is only 25 minutes away from the city center by U bahn or S bahn plus a short bus ride.
Since we will be outside, this workshop is weather-dependent. If we get rained out, we will try to reschedule for the following Sunday (Nov. 1st).
Picnic blankets, snacks and tea will be provided. Please bring layers and anything else you might need to stay warm and comfortable, like blankets and outdoor pillows. We will be sitting in the ground, so please plan accordingly.
If you are expensing this, a detailed invoice and verification of participation will be provided. If your finance team wants anything specific worded a particular way, email me before you book and I'll sort it out.
Photos and videos will be taken during the session. If you're not comfortable with your image being published, please let me know ahead of time. Nothing personal you share during the session will be shared without your express approval.
