ASAIN Visit: Jungfraujoch High-Altitude Research Station
Join ASAIN for a rare behind-the-scenes tour of Switzerland’s High Altitude Research Station at the Jungfraujoch! We are excited to offer a unique opportunity to learn about high altitude research in Switzerland first-hand, guided by Australia's very own Prof. Eliza Harris - Director of the International Foundation for High Altitude Research Stations Jungfraujoch and Gornergrat.
Note: Tickets are extremely limited, for a maximum capacity of 20 people aged 16+. Please register early to avoid disappointment, and join the waiting list if you miss out (we will contact the waiting list in case of cancellations).
Key information:
Date: Wednesday 10th of December, 2025
Start time: meet in Bern Hbf (7:45am) or Grindelwald Terminal (9:30am)
Meeting place: Bern Hbf (where we will take the train to the Jungfraujoch)
End time: 19:00 (Bern Hbf)
Cost: 100 CHF per person (including return train ticket from Grindelwald and lunch)
Dress: Warm, wind-proof clothing, shoes appropriate for being outside in winter, and sunglasses are advised.
Accessibility: age 16+, stairs (specific details below)
The program will include a tour of the research station, lunch, visit to the Sphinx laboratory, and an hour of free time to see the tourist centre and look at the views.
Accessibility: A significant part of this tour will be only accessible by long stairs. Due to the altitude this requires a certain level of fitness, and unfortunately there is no lift available for people with reduced mobility. It is possible to sit in a cafe and wait out this part of the tour, but please be aware when you are making the booking.
Weather: Of course we will coordinate with MeteoSwiss and do our best to arrange for good weather ;), but please remember that the Jungfraujoch is a high-altitude alpine environment! You will have the opportunity to go outside, please dress appropriately.
Transport: We will meet and take the train at 8:00am, from Bern Hbf (specific details to will be shared with registered guests closer to the event). If you are coming from elsewhere, it is possible to meet us at Grindelwald Terminal (NOT Grindelwald Dorf) at 9:30am. Ticket price includes the return train ticket from Grindelwald Terminal to the Jungfraujoch (we have a special price which may not be combined with half fare travelcard, GA, etc). Ticket price does not include the train to Grindelwald from Bern or elsewhere - this is the responsibility of each participant, please book in advance to avoid delays.
Situated at nearly 3,500 m above sea level, the Jungfraujoch offers a unique natural laboratory with extremely clean air, minimal local pollution, and high levels of solar and atmospheric radiation — ideal for high-precision measurements that would be impossible elsewhere. The research station is host to around 50 projects at any given time, and is part of the global monitoring network Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW), which is under the auspices of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Additionally, the Research Station Jungfraujoch acts as a key station in many more global, European or national networks such as Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC), Integrated Carbon Observation Systems (ICOS) etc.
