blockbuilding.wtf: compute-time continuum

​Blockbuilding is a process through which information from a diverse set of actors is incorporated into a joint computation that produces a single global outcome.

​This computation embodies the interaction of multiple actors who express their strategies along a continuum of latency optimisation, computation and direct payments.

​Spoofing, routing, liquidating are all concrete examples of these strategic interactions. An HFT firm may use latency optimisations or high bids to access known top-of-block state, whereas a blind arbitrageur will use onchain computations to scan uncertain states. Passive LPs give up access to all offchain information, in exchange for free inclusion and computation. All of these dynamics vary across block times, asset types, volatility etc.

​The compute-time continuum a zoo that keeps evolving. The rise of PropAMMs has created new information asymmetries, and pushed compute burdens onto takers. Prediction markets are changing the ways in which markets are tied together and expanding the surface for information to enter markets. Programmable privacy is altering the relationship between computation and information.
