Pawn Chess Club at Newlab

​Pawn Chess Club will be at Newlab on Tuesday, October 27th.

​This time, things are a little different. We'll have music from DJ DB (plus an open bar), as well as NM (National Master) Laura Smith playing a simul against 10 beginners at once. Come early to take part and get a dance or two in. We'll have plenty of boards, with lots of space to spread out—so you don't want to miss this one.

​Attendance is free, but you'll need to RSVP to access the space. We'll see you there!

​The Cumberland Gate—the closest Brooklyn Navy Yard entrance to Newlab—is accessible by bike, on foot, or by car. You can also take the NYC Ferry (Astoria Route)—just check their schedule here.

​About our collaborators

​NM (National Master) Laura Smith is a published author (Can I Take It? An Introduction to the Counting Tactic in Chess), Chessable course creator, chess master, coach, founder of Bay Ridge Chessmates, and Brooklyn-based schoolteacher. Her passion is guiding beginners of all ages through their chess journey and providing a clear path to improvement.

​DB Burkeman (DJ DB) is a DJ, artist, and publisher. He has been credited as being partly responsible for bringing drum and bass to America. Alongside DJ'ing, he has worked in the art and publishing worlds, and runs his own publishing company, Blurring Books.

​Pawn Chess Club is a pop-up chess club for beginners and experienced players (in that order). The club has held events at notable arts institutions like The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and collaborated with artists like Vince Skelly and Minjae Jim. It was started by Simone Robert and Isabel Münter in May 2023.
