Cowichan Valley Trail: Shawnigan Lake to Koksilah River
About the Trail🌲🗻
This 12.4 km out-and-back follows the Cowichan Valley Trail from Shawnigan Lake to the Koksilah River — a flat, scenic multi-use pathway built on a historic turn-of-the-century railway line. The compact gravel route runs through classic Vancouver Island forest with open stretches and peaceful views.
The surface varies from packed gravel to wooden boardwalk. The second half has a gentle grade and a downhill stretch near the 6.3 km mark. Some intersections have bollards that narrow the path to about a metre.
Physical Expectation ✅
An easy trail underfoot, but the distance is the real factor — those newer to hiking should be ready for a full 12+ km day.
