​So I decided to employ a "direct indexing" strategy -- instead of buying a single index fund, I used software to buy all 500 companies in the index directly.

​The benefit of this approach is even when the overall index was up, lots of individual companies are down -- and these positions can be "harvested" for tax losses.

​And these losses can offset gains elsewhere in my portfolio!
