​If it seems like gambling is suddenly everywhere, that's because it is. From sports betting to prediction markets, Americans have more ways to bet than ever before. And children and teenagers have been caught up in the gambling boom. A recent report found 36 percent of boys age 11-17 had gambled in the last year. Kids and adults alike are using gambling apps that are engineered for engagement, to keep users betting on everything from the NBA to Nigerian ping-pong. Gambling on offshore or crypto-based platforms is also rampant among high schoolers, as are video games with loot boxes or other gambling-like mechanics.

​Where did all this gambling come from? Why are boys and young men especially vulnerable? What is the best way to talk to a young person about gambling?

​The Common Ground Speaker Series presents distinguished speakers in education, parenting, and health at venues across the San Francisco Peninsula. Faculty and educators from non-member schools are also invited to participate free of charge. Guests from non-member schools and the general community can register and attend. ​We also welcome educators from member and nonmember schools to attend our events free of charge.  However, we'd like to get a better understanding of our audience and interests, and request that you register with your work / school .edu email address.  Educators must be employees of accredited educational institutions.
