Overview

Our city is full of aging but unaffordable housing. In this workshop we will work collectively to imagine bringing down the cost of housing while investing in the sustainability of our community. This activation is for anyone interested in shaping our built environment (no expertise needed)!

What to Expect

Bring your curiosity and a collaborative attitude to this conversation with your neighbors.

Here's what you can expect at the event:

  • A physical model (approximately 3 feet by 3 feet) of half a San Francisco block

    • an invitation to physically modify the model to express the workshop's collective vision for the future

  • Conversations with fellow workshop attendees weighing pros and cons of proposed changes

  • educational posters describing systems we might consider emulating in our model

  • Drinks & Light Bites

  • Live Musical Performance to kick the evening off

Parking & Transportation

  • Public Transportation

    • MUNI Bus Lines: The 22 Fillmore and the 7 Haight/Noriega both drop off right at the corner of Haight & Fillmore. The 6 Haight/Parnassus also stops right nearby.

    • MUNI Metro: The Church St Station (J, K, L, M, N lines) and the Duboce & Church St stop (N-Judah) are about a 10-minute walk (approx. 0.5 miles) away.

    • BART: Take BART to the Civic Center or 16th St Mission station, then grab a quick rideshare or transfer to a westbound MUNI bus.

  • Parking

    • Limited parallel street parking (both metered and unmetered residential) is available on Haight, Fillmore, Webster, and Page streets.

Accessibility & Considerations

The event is wheelchair accessible with a clear entrance at the street. The music will not be loud. Unfortunately, translation services are not available.

About the Future of Us Festival

Launching on America's 250th anniversary, the inaugural Future of Us festival is a 10-day celebration of civic imagination and possibility. We're turning community-sourced, expert-crafted visions of the future into art, storytelling, and participatory experiences. With 100+ events spanning every corner of the city (floral labyrinths, speculative future worlds, dance parties with a purpose, and neighborhood meet-ups), it's a living exploration of what a more creative and generative civic culture could feel like. Organized around four themes (Green Futures, Social Futures, Science & Tech Futures, and Media Futures), Future of Us is breaking down the barriers between art, ideas, and each other, and everyone is invited to co-imagine what comes next.

About the Future Culture Fellows Program

The Future Culture Fellowship is a yearlong program that resources the people best positioned to shape the future of civic life in San Francisco: the community builders, artists, and grassroots visionaries already rooted in neighborhoods and traditions across the Bay. Fellows design and host original, science- and arts-centered experiences that reflect their unique perspectives on what's possible, and become part of a growing Future Culture Collective dedicated to making civic life in SF more vibrant, connected, and imaginative. The event you're signing up for was dreamed up by one of the 2026 Fellows.
