APPG for Entrepreneurship: Evidence Session on NEETs
The All-Party Parliamentary Group for Entrepreneurship and The Entrepreneurs Network invite you to a discussion on how founders and the third sector can support those “Not in Education, Employment, or Training” (NEETs) into work and what is needed from the Government.
As the number of NEETs has increased to over a million in the UK, the entrepreneurial community has been eager to support youth into employment and entrepreneurship.
The APPG for Entrepreneurship is keen to hear from entrepreneurs and the third sector about their experiences and the obstacles they face in supporting youth employment and youth entrepreneurship. The evidence session will explore the experiences of youth founders and of founders supporting youth into employment, and will suggest policy recommendations for the Government. It will touch on the importance of youth entrepreneurship as a genuine pathway out of NEET status.
The discussion will be led by attendees and chaired by Tristan Osborne MP; likely themes include:
Practical barriers founders face when hiring, mentoring, or training NEETs into work
Whether current apprenticeship schemes are too geared towards established employers rather than SMEs and start-ups
The role of microfinance, mentoring and network gaps in supporting young people into entrepreneurship
What early-stage founders specifically need from the Government to make hiring NEETs easier
The third sector’s role and what support they need to keep doing this work
Early exposure and enterprise education — whether schemes are reaching the young people who most need them, not just those already on an academic/university track
Access to youth-specific start-up finance
An anonymised writeup will be produced off the back of the meeting, circulated within the APPG and with wider policymakers, with the aim of influencing the Young People and Work report.
This is an opportunity for a small group of founders and experts to engage directly with these issues and discuss practical steps to open up entrepreneurship as a genuine route into work for young people.
