Everyday Archives
Join the Mprovise Civic Imagination Lab for practical instruction and open conversation about what it means to research, steward, and preserve family and community history.
We'll learn the basics of archival work and how to care for personal photographs, flyers, posters, programs, letters, and family papers!
Participants are encouraged to bring their own materials (optional) and work through them alongside professional archivists from Brown University's Pembroke Center for Research and Teaching on Women and the Providence Public Library Rhode Island Collections.
By the end of the evening, you will:
Understand what archivists do and know where to find local preservation, information and library science resources
Know how to survey, describe, date, and catalog your materials the way an archivist would
Have a clearer sense of the values and ethics involved in collecting and sharing family and community belongings
Feel prepared to handle sentimental items, including those tied to grief or loss, while still protecting them for the future
Leave with techniques you can use to continue organizing your personal archive at home
No prior academic or archival experience necessary. This is an intimate session with limited space. Registration is required.
Materials provided, just bring yourself and your materials if you desire. Participants are also welcome to listen and take notes!
