Can Japan's Green Steel Claims Hold Up in Europe?

Japanese steelmakers are increasingly marketing "green steel" to meet growing demand for low-carbon materials. But could some of these claims face legal and regulatory challenges in Europe?
This SFOC webinar supported by JCLP will examine the findings of a new independent legal analysis, which explores potential EU legal risks associated with the use of mass balance methodologies in low-carbon steel claims. As European regulators tighten oversight of environmental marketing and implement the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), the discussion will consider what these developments could mean for Japanese steelmakers, automakers, investors, and other downstream customers.
Featuring a keynote address from Dr. Niccolò Ridi (King's College London), and two sessions from Dr. Kenichi Ishida (JCLP) and Mr Kaoru Koide (SFOC), the briefing will unpack emerging regulatory trends, potential trade and reputational risks, and the growing gap between Japanese and international approaches to green steel standards.
