Making Room: A Speaker Series Vol. 7

How to save a corner store: A neighbourhood retail story

In 2022, Finch Store, a neighbourhood corner store, was visited by Toronto Municipal Bylaw officers and the owner was told her espresso machine was unlawful. The regulations in her area did not allow food and drink preparations. Though about three years later, the Mayor hand-delivered her a new license.

Today, neighbourhood retail is legal across much of the city, a win that Dan Seljak helped make possible. On July 22nd, he tells the story of how it all unfolded.

Speaker Bio:

Dan Seljak is a street photographer, documentarian, and urbanist who has been observing (and sometimes even influencing) Toronto’s built environment through his multi media project Another Glass Box for the better part of a decade. Named after the common anguished refrain in response to newness, Another Glass Box is an attempt to meet the fear and opposition to change with curiosity and the tools to shape into something equitable, productive, and fun.
