Turning Stuck Meetings into Breakthrough Moments
We've all been in that meeting. The one that's going in circles. Where the energy has gone flat, the same two people keep talking, or something unspoken is quietly running the show.
Getting a group unstuck is one of the most practical — and most underrated — skills a facilitator can have. And it's not just about having the right tactic in your back pocket. The first move is diagnosis: what kind of stuck is this? The wrong intervention at the wrong moment can deepen an impasse rather than break it.
In this session, we'll work through a three-lever framework for generating movement: Strategic (the group is unclear on priorities or decision rights), Generative (the group is spinning, repeating itself, or out of ideas), and Encouragement (someone — or everyone — feels unseen or defeated). Each type calls for a different response.
We'll also talk about the inner stance that makes any of this possible. When things stall, the facilitator needs to be like water — calm, non-reactive, goal-oriented. Not protecting your own ego. Not getting pulled into the weeds. Holding the group to its own purpose.
You'll leave with a concrete toolkit, a diagnostic framework you can actually use in the moment, and a fresh look at a stuck meeting from your own experience.
